My family and I are getting ready to take our first international trip since 2018, when we traveled to Italy. Back then, our kids were seven and two, and our third kid didn’t exist yet. Now our children are fourteen, nine, and almost six, and after COVID lockdown and a few road trips to see my lovely in-laws in Tucson, we’re springing for a trip to Copenhagen, Denmark.
We chose Denmark for a few reasons. First, because Bean, our oldest, got obsessed with the country about eighteen months ago. It was the country’s socialized medicine that hooked him, and he stayed for its history, which he will recount to you upon request…and also without your request.
Patrick and I have never been to Denmark, and we’ve heard again and again how beautiful and family-friendly it is, and how good the restaurants are. (Basically, I want to go anywhere with good restaurants.) The coffee bars alone are enough to entice me. (Yes, we know it’s expensive.)
We also didn’t want to go somewhere hot—after all, we drive to Arizona every other vacation!
Originally, we hoped to visit more of the country and maybe pop over to other European cities, ending with a beach vacation in Spain. Turns out, we don’t have the money for that particular fantasy. We almost chucked the entire plan for a domestic road trip to Dollywood (really) until we decided we could, instead, narrow our goals: a vacation in Copenhagen proper, seeing the sights, eating very delicious food, popping into a castle, and checking out Tivoli, the local amusement park. We’ll take a day trip here and there.
There will also be a sojourn to LEGOLAND because…LEGOs are Danish!
Here are some of my travel plans and methods. Topics include air travel with kids, luggage, accommodations, and even, gasp, sex…
